nXPeds Foot Pedal FAQ*
Q: Can I use
nXPeds to do double-tap key actions and program macros in Unreal
Tournament 2003?
A: Absolutely! They are perfect for all
types of games that do not have built in macro capabilities. Best of
all, the programming is in the hardware so you don't need extra
software running on your computer. With nXPeds you can program advanced
macros with all types of key sequences, combinations and time delays to
dominate your opponents.
Q: I would like
to use a foot pedal to blank my screen in Windows when people approach
my desk so it doesn't appear that I am trying to hide something. Can I
use a nXPeds to do this?
A: Just make a shortcut to the
"scrnsave.scr" file in your Windows System or System32 directory. Right
click on the shortcut and choose "Properties" and make a Shortcut key
"Alt+F12". Then program "Alt+F12" into your nXPed and Voila! you have a
screen blanking foot pedal.
Q: I would like
to use a nXPeds to operate a second application that is running in the
background in Windows. Can this be done?
A: Keystrokes are only sent to the
"active" program in Windows. You can program "Alt+Tab" into the pedal
to switch between two applications. You can use this anywhere within a
sequence of programmed keystrokes. If you use "Alt+Tab" as the first
and last keystroke, the second program will become active and following
keystrokes will apply. The last "Alt+Tab" that you program will switch
back to the first application and you can continue with what you were
doing.
Q: I have an
application that requires a double key tap, but when I program this
into my nXPeds, it does not work.
A: Keystrokes are sent very fast from
the nXPeds to your computer. If the application is sensitive to the
speed at which the keys are pressed, then it may think that only one
key is pressed because the time delay between the taps are too quick.
You can use the "Slow Transmission Speed" programming option to fix
this.
Q: I would like
to program my nXPeds foot pedal to transcribe with Windows Media
Player, RealOne Player, or QuickTime player so when I press the pedal
down it plays and when I let the pedal up, it rewinds 2 seconds and
then stops. Can this be done?
A: Yes, this can be done with any
recording software by using the separate make/break commands and time
delay commands. For Windows Media Player, program "Ctrl+P" for when you
press the pedal down to play. Then program the pedal release with
"Ctrl+Shift+B" to rewind, then program four "Esc+5" commands for a 2
second delay, and then program "Ctrl+S" to stop. For the RealOne
Player, play is "Ctrl+P", rewind is "Ctrl+[", and stop is "Ctrl+S".
QuickTime player uses the spacebar for start /stop and the left arrow
key to step backwards.
Q: Can I use my
PS/2 keyboard with the PS/2 version of the nXPeds?
A: Yes, the PS/2 version works with your
keyboard. It simply plugs in between your keyboard and the PS/2 port on
your computer.
Q: The small
side pedals on my nXPeds are hard to push because they are so low. What
can I do?
A: There are small adjustment screws on
the underside of the nXPeds that allow you to adjust the height of the
all three pedals. The lower you set the pedals, the less free movement
you have. You can lower the middle pedal, which makes the auxiliary
pedals protrude higher or you can raise the auxiliary pedals only... or
a combination of both. These adjustments are also good for equalizing
the height of the auxiliary pedals.
Q: I installed
the programming drivers in Windows but can't program my nXPeds. What is
the problem?
A: You must have the Windows HID
keyboard drivers loaded. You may need to install the drivers using the
"Add New Hardware Wizard." Have your Windows Installation CD available.
Q: Can I
program the nXPeds to perform more than one keystroke?
A: Yes, you can program all 3 of the
switches to perform up to a total of approximately 900 keystrokes or
key combinations.
Q: Do the
nXPeds require there own power supply?
A: No they operate like a USB or PS/2
keyboard.
Q: Do I have to
use a keyboard or mouse for the nXPeds to operate?
A: No, the nXPeds will operate with no
other input device installed on your computer.
Q: Is the USB
version faster than the PS/2 version?
A: USB is faster than PS/2, but with the
nXPeds you won't be able to tell the difference since they operate like
a keyboard.
Q: Are the
nXPeds easy to use?
A: Yes they are very easy to use. If you
are a computer user already, you will be comfortable using the nXPeds
in just a few hours. If you program the nXPeds with the proper
functions, you will be quicker at many computer tasks.
Q: Can I
program the nXPeds for joystick operation?
A: No, the nXPeds perform on/off
keyboard switching action.
Q: Can I use
the nXPeds with computer games?
A: Yes, you can use them with any game.
Be aware that they do not operate as controls for continuous motion
actions like gas, brake, or rudders. The nXPeds operate like a key on
your keyboard and are ideal for "first person shooter" games.
Q: Can I buy
only one nXPed?
A: Yes the nXPeds are sold as individual
units but for many applications you should use a pair of them so you
have one main switch for the left foot and one for the right foot. The
small auxiliary switches on the side were not intended to be used for
both right and left foot simultaneously since they are so close
together.
Q: I use
Windows NT 4.0 and it does not support USB, how can I use the nXPeds
with this operating system?
A: http://store.bsquare.com
has USB drivers available for Windows NT 4.0 that should work fine with
the nXPeds. Although the programming software is not supported in
Windows NT 4.0, you can program the pedals with one of the compatible
operating systems before using them. You can also use the PS/2 version
of the nXPeds with Windows NT 4.0 or other operating systems that
implement PS/2 keyboard devices.
Q: Can I use
multiple nXPeds?
A: Yes, you can use 2 or more. The
nXPeds have a contemporary design where by you may daisy chain the PS/2
or use multiple USB nXPeds on a USB hub.
Q: Do the
nXPeds foot pedals come in different colors?
A: Sorry, the nXPeds were made for
durability and performance, not visual aesthetics.
* nXPeds does not
support or guarantee that any 3rd party software described in this FAQ
implements shortcut keys, functions properly, or in any way compatible
with nXPeds foot pedals.
